Section 278 works are highway improvements required as part of planning permission, enabling developers to make permanent changes to the public highway, such as new site access, junction upgrades, crossings and associated infrastructure.
These works must meet strict local authority standards and go through approvals, inspections and final adoption
That's where we come in

We manage the full Section 278 process, from pre-start coordination and approvals through to construction, inspection and final handover, giving you a single, reliable delivery partner.

We work closely with highway authorities across the Midlands, ensuring designs, approvals and site works meet adoptable standards first time, reducing delays and rework

If you have drawings and planning conditions, you can upload them using the form below and we will respond with scheme-specific advice.
Ideally we would receive current drawings (general arrangement, long sections and typical details), planning conditions relating to highway works, any highway authority technical approvals already in place, a draft programme and any known constraints (e.g. embargo periods, utilities diversions, neighbouring developments). However, we are used to working with incomplete information at early stages and can highlight assumptions and risks clearly in our proposal.
Yes. We can review draft designs for buildability and phasing, give indicative cost and programme advice, and support discussions with the local highway authority and your designer. Identifying issues early – such as traffic management complexity, tie-in levels or utilities conflicts – reduces the risk of redesigns and late changes once approvals are in place.
We regularly act as principal contractor for Section 278 and access works packages and are comfortable integrating with your wider site and CDM arrangements. Alternatively, where you retain principal contractor status, we can operate as a specialist subcontractor working within your management systems and permit processes.
We recommend allowing for design approval, roadspace bookings, TTROs (if required), utilities diversions and pre-start meetings – often several months before the physical works are due to commence. Early engagement allows us to sequence works to support key milestones such as first occupations or show home openings and to avoid seasonal embargoes or clashes with other works on the network.
We are based in the Midlands and typically deliver Section 278 and access works across the wider Midlands region and surrounding counties. For larger or strategically important schemes we may be able to work further afield – please get in touch with outline details and we will confirm availability.
