Safe, durable and people‑focused public spaces, delivered by a Midlands civil engineering and highways contractor that understands local authority standards, developer pressures and live environment constraints.
Typical project values from £100k–£5m across the Midlands and neighbouring regions.
We work as a delivery partner for local authorities, developers and principal contractors to turn approved designs into safe, buildable and maintainable spaces.
Send us your drawings, specification and constraints and our team will provide a structured response, programme outline and risk considerations.
Our public realm and open space work is delivered for organisations that need a reliable, safety‑focused contractor who can operate in live, often politically sensitive environments.
Delivery of town centre schemes, neighbourhood improvements, parks and streetscapes in line with your technical standards, approvals and governance processes.
Public realm and open space packages on residential, mixed‑use and commercial projects, including adoption‑ready streets and spaces delivered to local authority requirements.
A contractor who respects design quality while advising on buildability, phasing and details so that your concept performs safely in day‑to‑day use and stands up to heavy footfall and traffic.
We also support estates teams, regeneration partnerships and public‑sector delivery vehicles who need a contractor that can communicate clearly with members, stakeholders and the public throughout delivery.
R W Services is a Midlands‑based civil engineering and highways contractor delivering public realm, streetscape and open space schemes for the public and private sector. From town centre improvements and high street public realm to estate upgrades, pocket parks and shared surfaces, we provide buildable solutions that respect the original design intent while meeting safety, durability and maintenance requirements.
We are used to working in live, pedestrian‑heavy environments with tight programmes, fixed budgets and demanding stakeholder groups. Our teams plan works to minimise disruption, keep people safe and hand over spaces that are robust, attractive and simple for in‑house highways and grounds teams to look after.
We can work under traditional, design‑and‑build or framework arrangements and are comfortable engaging early with designers and client teams to de‑risk buildability, utilities, phasing and traffic management.
If you have a scheme in RIBA Stages 3–5, we can quickly review the information and advise on programme, risks and delivery options.
We combine civil engineering, highways and streetscape experience to deliver complete public realm and open space packages. Typical scope includes:
For every public realm and open space scheme we focus on clear, auditable deliverables so client, designer and contractor are aligned on what ‘good’ looks like.
Construction phase plans, risk assessments, method statements (RAMS) and traffic management proposals aligned to CDM and your internal approvals process.
Realistic programme with clear milestones, phasing and access/road closure requirements so members, businesses and residents understand what will happen and when.
ITPs, inspection records, as‑built drawings, maintenance information and warranties so your asset, highways and parks teams have everything they need post‑completion.
A structured, safety‑led process that keeps public, political and programme risks under control from tender through to handover.
Four things our public realm and open space clients value most about how we work.
Robust RAMS, trained operatives and clear segregation of the public, cyclists and vehicles. We plan around schools, events and businesses to keep people and reputation safe.
Used to working around pedestrians, traders and residents. We manage access, noise and cleanliness carefully to reduce complaints and programme disruption.
Attention to sub‑base, falls, joints and details that stand up to heavy use and harsh weather. We understand adoption and maintenance requirements from day one.
Named contacts, regular reporting and no surprises. We know Members, senior officers and developers want visibility on progress, risk and spend at all times.
If you cannot see your question below, please get in touch and we will be happy to respond with project‑specific information.
We are based in the Midlands and typically deliver projects across the wider Midlands region and neighbouring areas. For larger or longer‑term schemes we are happy to discuss working slightly further afield. If you share the project location and anticipated value, we can quickly confirm whether it is a good fit.
We can support from RIBA Stage 3 onwards. Many clients ask us to review designs at Stage 3/4 to comment on buildability, phasing, utilities and traffic management before details are fixed. We are equally comfortable joining at Stage 5 with a completed design and focusing purely on safe, efficient delivery.
Yes. We routinely work under NEC and JCT forms and are familiar with the reporting, early warning and compensation event requirements. We are also experienced in delivering projects via local frameworks and term contracts and can adapt our reporting and commercial processes to suit.
Safety is led from the planning stage. We prepare detailed RAMS, traffic management drawings and phasing plans, then coordinate with your highways, comms and estates teams. On site we use clear segregation, signage and banksmen, keep routes open where required, and monitor works daily to ensure controls remain effective as conditions change.
Yes. Many public realm schemes require night, weekend or restricted‑hour working to protect businesses, public transport and residents. We factor this into methodology, programme and pricing from the outset, and work with you and relevant authorities to agree acceptable working windows.
Drawings (latest revision), specification, any existing surveys, planning/technical approval conditions, constraints (access, working hours, noise limits), target dates and your preferred form of contract. If available, a bill of quantities or schedule of rates is helpful but not essential. You can upload drawings and specifications directly via the enquiry form on this page.
We review available utility records and ground information at tender stage and highlight risks in our submission. During delivery we coordinate any required trial holes, CAT & Genny scans and service diversions with your team and utility providers. Where unforeseen issues arise, we document them clearly, propose solutions and agree any programme or cost implications before proceeding.
Yes. We are experienced acting as principal contractor on public realm, highways and open space schemes. We can develop and manage the Construction Phase Plan, coordinate subcontractors and ensure health, safety and welfare duties are fulfilled throughout the works.
